Hello everybody, well I'm here to introduce myself as the newest member of the group. My name is Davis and I live in Canton. I joined because I'm just getting into the hobby. I've been wanting to have a reef aquarium for a while and up until recently my girlfriend and I have been really taking about getting into the hobby. Lucky for me a friend decided to sell his 35 gallon after he decided to upgrade and I jumped on it. I know I know, 35 gallons is small and I'll eventually upgrade and get a bigger one. So I have been doing a lot of research over the past month and watching a TON of videos. I eventually came up with the conclusion that I wanted to get live rock and decided on tbsaltwater. Rocks come straight from the ocean and are bagged in water and will come with a bunch of hitchhikers which I think will be really cool. Hopefully fingers crossed there won't be too many bad hitchhikers but I'm gonna let the rocks sit for a couple months and see what's growing and coming out of them before I start putting a lot of fish in. Maybe 1 or 2 small fish to start. Any suggestions or thoughts on these rocks will be appreciated as I'm completely new to this. My girlfriend and I will be attending the monthly meetings as well so hope to see you all there and start learning!

I got about 100lbs of the tbrocks and it was great rock , but there were some bad hitchhikers. There was more thank one gorilla crab and some nuisance algae, but other than that great rock. Only thing I didn't like was you cant pick the size of the rock.
Welcome to the club !

Thanks everybody, extremely excited to start this tank! And thanks for your input kzoo, I figured there would be a few hitchhiker crabs and shrimp to get rid of but crossing my fingers it won't turn into a full time job getting rid of the bad things that come with it. Hopefully get some nice coral on the rocks and stuff. Anything good come with the rocks you got kzoo?

Welcome to ARC Davis. There are lots of good people here and many on your side of town too. The fist piece of advice is read, read, read. Do it here, other forums and books. Then read some more, lol.

The 1st equipment you should buy is an RODI system for your water. That is unless you like hauling 5 gallon jugs back and forth from a LFS. Then get your system setup and plumbed, add good water and check for leaks before you order the TBS rock. If you are going to let the rock sit and observe it before adding anything else as far as livestock I wouldn't add any sand until before you're ready to add some fish. You will also need to feed the tank within the next day or two after adding the rock. Feeding in areas away from the rock with the pumps off will help you get the hitchhikers out of their hiding spots. This will make it easier to get the bad ones out. Once the rock is in the system will be pretty much cycled from that point on so feeding will not be an issue. That's why getting everything set up before you order it is so important, you lower the risk of killing things off by having the rock sit while you're setting it up.

You've got the right plan and watching the rock to start is great and you'll be amazed with everything you'll see. Good luck and fire off any questions you have.

Thank you for the advice Anit! I am waiting to order rock until I can order an RO/DI, that is my first and main purchase before anything happens. I thought about asking my friend to borrow his to get the initial fill and some spare water for salt and top off just to get the cycle started but I'd rather have one in place here for the start. Many good ideas you gave me to think about that have not crossed my mind. Thank you!
