I have them over 2 different tanks one in a canopy about 9" above the water there only at 35% as its mainly lower light coral in the tank
My 29g cube is 14" above the water at roughly 70% per channel I gro acro's in the top 1/3 no problem.
Just start them at around 35,% and go up 5% a week until things are growing and reacting as you want , be especially careful with coral coming fro under t5 or mh tend to take a little more time for me to get happy.
These lights are a whole lot stronger than most people realize so don't cook your coral
Glad to see your upgrading! I have mine 12 in above the waterline at the top of my canopy

I ran mine about 10" off the water when I was running them. They did extremely well at that height. It was a 93 cube and I hung two units over it. I didn't get any dark spots at that height.
