I think the favorite is going to be don't put one on. They are notorious for clogging and blowing pumps out. They also can cause the overflow to stop overflowing and the contents of the sump to be pumped to the main tank further causing a very wet floor.
Try to plan your system so you don't need one ( ie put any outputs placed deep in the tank on a closed loop system, and only use outputs and intakes placed high in the tank for any open system ).
