13.5 Rock addition

I have an established 13.5 that is in need of a baseball size piece of live rock.

Are there any pitfalls to adding smaller rocks to my tank? I don’t think a huge cycle would take place would it? Would a Live rock be better than rock that has never seen life?

Either live or dry is fine, just different considerations with each.

For dry rock, you’re going to want to cook/cure it first. Biggest concern, especially in a nano, is the breakdown of old organisms on the rock and leeching of phosphates into the tank. Curing the rock outside of the tank will allow that rock to cycle without the impact on your tank. Plenty of videos on YouTube about it but you basically just need a bucket, water, heat, and maybe some flow.

For live rock, biggest concern is any hitchhikers. You most likely would be fine, but there’s always a risk with introducing unwanted things to your tank.
