I'm starting my first reef tank. It is an old 29 gallon, 30" tank. Should I use metal halide or t5 lighting and where can I find a fixture to hold the lights?

What I offer is my opinion only. Both are good but MH are much stronger and much pricier. I think this choice is up to you. MH will give you plenty of light for any type of coral you choose...LPS, SPS, Softies, Clams...right on down the list. They also have a tendency to heat your tank so you might need a chiller in summer months. T5's will give you decent lighting as well but not as strong. There is another thread going right now that covers what folks are growing under their T5"s. Still, you can grow LPS, SPS, Softies, Clams etc as well. Just go with higher wattage. If you have a shallow tank, you are pretty much well ok. Some people like the shimmer effect from the MH...that is a personal preference. Both can be purchased with the feet to attach to a tank. The price tag is a major difference with MH being a lot more expensive. I myself am running T5's. Bottom line...it's up to you. :)

I have a MH over my 30 hex, and I love it. But then again, its only a length of 15" so to keep a reef. MH was my only choice.

If you can get t-5s over your tank, I think that would be the most cost effective option, as well as looking good with good growth.

The MH shimmer is not worth the cost IMO, but again, in my tank it was the only direction I could go.

Oh, and I'll just raise the pendant and cut the photo time in the summer to help keep the tank cool without a chiller

Quite frankly I find T5's to be more expensive. Only suggestion I'll give, is if you go with T5, get either a retro fit kit and get good reflectors, or buy a fixture that has individual reflectors in it. The thing that gives T5 the power is the reflector. Under either set up, you can grow pretty much anything. Just all depends on what look you're going for.

Where can I get a t5 reflector kit cheap? And should I get the two bulb or the 4 bulb?

My tank is 30" long. I'm having trouble finding a 30" fixture. Would a 24" fixture work for this tank? or maybe 36"? Which would be better? Does anyone have any experience with t5s that can show me where to find them for cheap?

My tank is 30" as well. 30" T5 fixtures use 24" bulbs w/24w. Check the sponsor page and find a store close to you. Current has great lighting options for this size tank. You can get a 30" nova extreme 2x24w anywhere from $70-$100. This is a great light at a great price. Most all LFS in the area carry them. Good luck.

Since this is my first reef tank and all should i just go with the 2 bulb set up? I have no idea about differences in corals and such. Will I still be able to have a very birght and colorful "reef"? Or do I need the 4 bulbs?

Also you may want to look into a 4 bulb fixture because of the depth of your tank. Price is typically double.

For softies and lps corals you don't need extreme lighting. For SPS corals you're gonna want the 4 bulbs on your tank.

Do the fixtures typically come with the bulbs or do I need to order those separate? Also What is a good combination of actinic and white bulbs? And what is the differnece besides the color that it makes the tank?

Fixtures typically come with bulbs. A 4 bulb would probably have 2 actinics and 2 10ks

Soft corals , Large polyp stony corals and small polyp stony corals. Hang on I'm gonna get you link with tons of good info. One of the first places I looked when I was new.

So I was looking at the t5HO fixtures at fishneedit.com and they are really cheap. Are they not very good or is this just a steal?

Go to saltaquarium.about.com. Lots of good info and links to more good info

IDK never looked there but in this hobby you get what you pay for. Try to do business local. You will get more good info from your local LFS and you have a real person to go to with questions/concerns.

You're very welcome. Just be sure to post a build thread and let us all know how it goes. Always someone here to help.
