Has anyone tried running a small aquarium with just an HOB filter? I have a 29gallon that I'd like to use as a zoa tank but don't want to just kill everything. I have a 150MH for it so the lighting should be sufficient and would also have live rock and some small powerheads for filtration.

I ran a 3 gal pico with just an HOB on it.

So a 29 is a mega aquarium by comparison

You will be fine just do weekly water changes.

Most people with a biocube 29 doesn't. Use skimmer just back filtration wich is normally consist of just filter floss. I ran a 34 gallon solana with no skimmer and was growing sps and Lps with just a five gallon a week water change.
