Are kalkwasser and lime water the same thing? They're both made up of calcium oxide, right? If not, could someone explain the difference to me.
Thanks

Yes, "kalkwasser" is German, literally translated into "lime water". Both are calcium hydroxide, CaOH.

This is also the same as pickling lime, which can be found at your local grocery store, although you take a chance that there might be some contaminates in it.

Took the words right off my keyboard.

Be careful with it - it's caustic stuff.

and when you mix your slury... DONT get it on your carpet haha.. its murder to get out.

ALSO.

There are different GRADES of Kalk. Some will "dissolve" easier with less stirring than others will.

IF you care I get mine from http://www.bulkreefsupply.com">www.bulkreefsupply.com</a> I buy a gallon of it at a time and it lasts quite a while. seems to be of a reasonable grade.

That reminds me- kalk is one of the few compounds that dissolves easier in cooler water. Put some water in the fridge for a while and the kalk will dissolve in it much easier than warm water. Strange, but true.

Also- never mix in saltwater- always use fresh water (preferably RO/DI, if adding to your tank).

I didn't know about the cool water thing. Gonna give it a try. I use kalc a good bit. Good to know, thanks!
