Is there any dangers in adding send to an established system? Are there any precautions I should take before adding the sand? Also I'm going to make a deep sand bed in my refugium what is the best type of sand to use for that?

I 've had no problems with adding new sand to an established system. Just be careful how you add it.... I use a small tupperware container and slowly fill with tank water at the surface then bring the container down to the bottom and spread slowly.

it's a necessary maintenance, imho to remove and add some sand every couple of months.

a net works to remove, or you can use a hose during a water change into a bucket that overflows into another bucker, or a long wetvac hose on a lowes buckethead.

no clue on deepsand bed, as I have nothing in my sump that can retain detritus.

I do the same thing except I use a coke bottle

+1 as long as you dont just dump it in you shouldnt have much cloudyness but honestly id rinse it first even if its live sand just to get the dust out of it. cause one day youll have a crazy fish diggin in the sand and wont be able to see in the tank for days.

Ok thanks for the info. I just went to Petsmart and they were charging like $50 for a 20# bag so I said bump that! It looks like I will go to Macon tomorrow to try and get some sand for a decent price.

Does anyone order sand or know a good place to get sand for a reasonable price?

I know its important to replace sand to avoid what people call old tank syndrome. I have a diamond goby they completely filters my sand every two days. I also have a randalls goby and two wrasse that live in the sand. With all that movement of the sand should I still replace some?

I did pick up two small powerheads from Petsmart to add to my sump and refuge to help keep detritus up in the water column.

I pulled out and redid my entire sand bed from white sand to black and everything was fine I used the sand you buy that's in the bag already in some water
