They really are not able to compete for food with any fish in my experience. They will literally swim through a mound of bloodworms and bite nothingness. It becomes a lot of work to hand feed them and in a bigger tank they are often hard to find. It's a shame because they are goofy little characters.
I kept one for 2 or 3 years back in the day. A sponge cover can help it stay out of filters. I would feed a varied diet including beefheart, bloodworms and live blackworms when I could find them.
