1. What do you all feel is the best way to rid of Aiptasia? We have one (just one that we've seen thus far) growing on what started as a piece of dead, dry, base rock! We'd like to stop it before it gets out of control and before we end up moving everything into the 92 eventually.

2. And what you all feel is the best way to rid of cyano? We have it covering the bottom of our very first ever piece of live rock which holds our first paly colony. It appears to have found its way to our front glass too.

As a side question, what product do you use to dip your corals before you introduce them to your tank?

I read that Peppermint shrimp may eat Aiptasia?

1. Aiptasia
2nd best way is make a Kalk paste from Mrs. Wages pickling lime and water. about the consistency of wasabi sauce.
Best way? I think Dave or someone has some kind of nuclear bomb stuff.

2. Control your phosphates & nitrates. There are various methods including aggressive skimming, gfo, vodka, water changes, etc.

if you only have one i would nuke it with some kalk paste as far as cyano more flow and good water quality, the only time i have had problems with cyano was when my nitrates got a little high.

Try kalkwasser paste for the aiptasia. For the cyno check your phosphate and NA levels.

I bought some LR from another LFS out this way that was pretty heavily infested, purchased 2 peppermint shrimp, and they got rid of all of it, and I have yet to see anymore. Joe's Juice and the bomb stuff seam to work well for others, personally never had to use it.

2. Sufficient flow and keep your nitrates and phosphates down will help with the cyano.

I have a small bottle of joe's juice, if you guys are over on this side of town it's yours. Just call me and let me know.

I don't know how I feel about using chemicals to treat something either, I'd much rather try a Peppermint Shrimp first (is there truth to the previous post about a specific type of peppermint shrimp?)... If we go the juice route though we'll definitely let you know!

I wonder what started the cyano, I though it was too much food or something in the tank but then I remember this started before we started putting coral foods in the tank too...

I like Aptaisa X. I bought it from Tim of Keen reef. Very easy to use (and tastes great LOL). Really, I found it to be a great product.

Should I kill the lights for a day or 2 to start to starve out the cyno? It is in a very high flow area of my tank, I really need to do a WC tonight, I will check my nitrates as well. Phosphates should not be a problem but I will check them anyway.

Hummm... Good Call Cliff. I will try to vac it. I am about 3 days late on my WC. I really need to get this 92 going and set up easy WC for it. I need to start doing 2 WC a week to get ready for the swap in a month or so.

I'm starting to get a little cyano too.....I blame it on a fish dying while I was out of town....and was completely eaten by the time I got back.....only 2 days....my nitrates shot up and I've done about 40g total of WC since and it's starting to die off pretty good....I've use chemi-clean in the past but would rather go the non chemical route from now on.....and for the Aiptasia.....peps work great for most of the smaller ones but IME they usually leave the larger ones alone....those I hit with some joes juice.....guess it depends on the shrimp if it wants to eat the bigger ones or not though...

The one I see is small... I like the shrimp idea best cause he can see ones I cant iff there is more. The cyno has been there since day one but never spread until I bumped my light cycle up.

From what I know if you see one then you have more....so the peps would probably help get the ones ya can't see.....yeah I didn't start getting cyano till after I got the halide....and I guess the loss of the fish gave it a kick start.....but I have my phosphates down to .01....and my nitrates are back to >5....so ships see that cyano die off pretty quick.....started running chemi-pure elite the other day and that seems to have help with the trates and phates......

I used Joe's on Aiptasia for over a year and they just kept coming back. Then I talked to a guy in Alabama that told my to use concentrate lemon juice and a syringe into the base of the little bast**ds. So, I tried it and it works great!!!! Kills them and they do not come back. I only used about 6 cc's at a time and it did not mess with my levels at all. And the best part it was free. My local Rx gave me a syringe and I had a little bottle of lemon juice.

I think we decided to stop somewhere on the way home to find a peppermint shrimp first... chemicals last... we'll see how well that idea works, :fish:

I work in sandy springs near weiuca.....let me know and I can bring you some joes or chemiclean if you want as well....

If you have one Aiptasia on what used to be tried dead base, rest assured, you have more than the one. It didn't miraculously appear there. If it were just one, I'd say nuke it with Dave's Napalm, but chances are, there's many more just waiting to spring up, in which case I'd suggest peppermints

Cyno is all the usual suspects, phosphate, overfeeding, not enough waterchanges with manual removal of the cyno through vacuuming after the lights have been on all day.
