What is the yellowish algae in this picture? (upper left rock shows it the best). I cannot find it on a web search and was wondering if it was good/bad. Tank has been set up about two months and this just started appearing about a week after setting up lighting (MH and T-5). I am guessing it is just a different form of green algae?

Most of the time the yellow/green algae appears just before the coraline grows on the rock. I call it lime green.......

I think it's the first stage of coraline growth.

I've had some green and coraline algae for awhile...will wait to see what develops.

Thanks

Thanks

Make sure you check and keep your calcium levels up at ~400-450 to get good coraline growth.

just tested it and it is stable at 450...had a little snow about a week ago but none since

This is type of green film algae. It's the same type you get on the glass of the tank. If you scrape the algae off the back of the tank, you might notice that the green algae gets harder and harder to scape - it won't come off with the little glass magnet anymore - you have to take a razor blade to it.

Eventually, it will begin to marble and you will see pink, red or purple mixed in - coraline algae.

I don't really have any green algae on the back anymore since picking up a Coral Beauty...she is a lawnmower and has eaten all the green algae in 3 days! :D The back was covered with hundreds of small tufts before that...the rocks are faring much better though.
