Algae in refugium question

I placed algae in my refugium in addition to a Bio Reactor and after 3-4 months the hair algae in my main tank is starting recede and is almost gone. However, the algae in the refugium at this point has almost filled the refugium. I am afraid if I cut it back or reduce the amount of algae in the refugium, my concern is that it will reduce the ability of my system to keep the nutrients in check and promote the hair algae growth in my main tank. I'm sure the combination of the algae and reactor is working, but should I maintain the current level of algae and reactor to keep it in check or cut back the algae for space sake? Or should the refugium be as full as possible with algae?

I have heard of people cutting back the algae and now I don't understand why. What is the advantage and disadvantage of allowing the algae to fill the refugium?

If it gets too thick, it can shade itself out, and the lower areas can start to die, releasing nutrients back into your system. Harvesting some takes those nutrients out of your system for good, and gives room for more growth.
