Hi there, I have a couple acro frags plus maybe one other frag higher up in my tank. The acros have small amounts of algae growing on the tips while some other frags don’t have this problem. Should I move the acros down or just leave them be and see what happens. They’ve only been in the tank maybe 3-4 weeks. I don’t otherwise have an algae problem. Thanks...

If algae is growing on the tips, then tips must be dead and the algae is growing on the skeleton. Was it this way when you got it? What kind of lights are you running and have you ever got a PAR reading? You may be burning the tips.

Do you test your water? Parameters stable?

They were fine when I got them. I do think I’ll dial back the lighting. I have some black box Amazon lights that work but the settings are very basic. I’ve never taken a PAR reading...just don’t have the equipment. I know that I can borrow a PAR meter from the club and test so maybe that will be my next step. I don’t have any other significant algae growing in my tank and coralline is growing in various places. Will also test Alk today. Just did a 15% water change.

What are your other parameters as well? And how often do you test Alk? Alk swings have caused burnt tips for me in the past

It could certainly be an Alk issue. I’ve been using a test kit that I’ve decided I don’t like (tropic Marin). The alkalinity part of the kit just isn’t very precise. I’ve also struggled a bit with precipitation when dosing kalkwasser. It just doesn’t seem to dissolve in my water. Anyway, I just ordered the Hannah Alk tester so that should help me take accurate readings in the future. In all honesty, it could be unstable alkalinity that’s causing the issue. My soft corals appear to be in good shape but they can pretty much take anything.
