Set up RO/DI to top off my aquarium. Had VERY unexpected family show up.....ended up outside and forgot about RO/DI running. Came inside to find sump almost at overflowing into my floor.

The issue.....I'm out of salt, don't feel too great (migraine headache) and just checked and I'm at 1.020. Should I panic? I REALLY don't feel like running anywhere to get salt. I will but this isn't ideal for my pounding head right now.

I only have fish.

What do you guys think?

Not good...get some salt, and raise salinity daily by 1 or 2....yes, all fish can die...hopefully, not...

I can only speak from experience. I kept my nano at 1.019- 1.020 with softy coral and fish for years. I would not think this I'd a problem. Only speaking from my experience.

The biggest issue I see is the FAST drop. The level will be ok for a while. I would raise it back over a few days.

+1. Lower salinity is tolerable w/fish. Just don't do it all at once and burn there gills

1.020 is fine. I've had mine drop even lower than that(Thanks to my previous crappy skimmer overflowing)and they were fine

You'll be fine. Your fish are not going to all die. No need to spaz out. Depending on the tank size, I'm sure it was a fairly gradual drop. Raise it with multiple water changes when you can.

well, disagree, albeit hopefully wrong....having fish in 1.020 or whatever is fine.....changing it from 1.026 to 1.02 quickly CAN cause issues due to salinity and PH changes that quick........

I would agree with this completely. The fast drop is over and done with. Can't do anything to change that. Using this method allows for gradual increase. Doing water changes may raise it to fast shocking them all over again.

if it is the case that you have your RO-DI hook up straight to your tank, you are looking for more disasters sooner or later. How much water you could get in your tank ( and house) if the ATO that you install happens to fail on your vacations or just an overnight? I would suggest to just hook up a 5 gallons top off tank for replenishing evaporated water for your tank, then another container hook up to your Ro unit, just to have water on demand, and make just as many as you could need. Hope it helps and you don't have any losses. Jmo

Yea, it never rains in lagoons near the equator.

Yup, just let it be and let the water evap naturally. The gradual raise will be much easier on the fish and coral.

The question is, how fast did it happen.

We acclimate fish over an hour and go from 1.017 up to 1.025, just fine. With the ATO feeding in, it probably took a few hours to get down this low.

If the fish are doing okay after a few hours, don't sweat it. Bring it back up through water changes or normal evaporation.

The WORST thing you'll want to do IMHO, is to overreact and dump a ton of salt in.
