Ok so I took your advice and took the 3 stripe back. My bangi cardinals came in yesterday as well as my 3 turbo snails. Everyone made it through the night. The snails are going to town on the brown sludge that has been accumulating. And my cardinals and chromis are just swimming all over the place. Lol I'm don't adding fish for now. But in two weeks I'm getting some maroon clowns. They are absolutely awesome. My lfs got on in but I'm not ready for them yet.

Pain In The ***. Maroon clowns are pound for pound some of the meanest fish in the reef.

Oh lord. Never mind then. What are some other more docile clowns? Are darwinclownfish nice? I like those...

Darwins would be a better bet. Any Percula or Occelaris or designer derivative will be much better behaved.

+1 on Maroons being a PITA...as far as I know, most other types are a lot more docile than Maroons.
What did your LFS say about them? Just curious.
Shoot jamescook or merkeywater a message. They both breed clowns and are awesome guys. There may be more breeders but I'm not sure.

I find skunk clowns to be among the least obnoxious. All clowns can be obnoxious but some are much more so than others.

What size tank is it?

And what is the "brown sludge" you referred to?

Jenn

The tank is 130 gallons. The brown sludge from what I understand from a previous thread is diatoms. I think. It just started growing all over my rock and sides of the glass. My freshwater tanks get it as well... but the snails are tearing it up so I can't be that bad right?

Ah OK. If it's a newly-established tank, then yes, diatom algae are normal.

LOL. I honestly kind of hate my skunks. Any fish that is smaller than then they kill. I think I'm going to get rid of then and get another pair.

Yup. It's been up and running for 2 months now. I did a fish less cycle so it took a little bit. Lol

All clownfish can be aggressive, but I wouldn't want a tank without them.

I love my saddleback an really don't want to let her go, but I think I like my ocellaris pair more and will only have one tank up. I ended up making a home for my ocellaris when I got rid of my nano in my qt , and now I just have another nano complete with kessil lighting live rock coral and macro algae. So I accomplished nothing except now I don't have a qt!

But my advice is just get the ones you really want. Sure maroons can be a pain but so can ocellaris or percula, although I would go with one of the latter personally, that doesn't necessarily make the maroons a bad choice if you felt strongly enough about them.

It's all about compatibility. If you want aggressive fish that's not a huge issue, you just have to plan your stock list accordingly. I probably can't have another wrasse with my mystery wrasse, but I'm okay with that, because I really like the mystery wrasse!

It's only an issue if I later on decide I want something else, but I would have an opportunity to rehome the fish when I switch tanks. If you're planning on your set up running for years, always consider what you put in because you may not be able to get it out :)

Fire goby didn't make it. I've had my first death in my tank. :-( sad moment.

Well sorry to hear that. It's sad when a fish dies because you kind start liking it a lot. Well good luck with all of your other fish.

Thanks. Everyone else is fine just swimming like nothing is wrong. Lol but that goby never came out and I just found him this morning he was dead

I have two Mocha Clowns that I absolutely love! They're have beautiful colors, especially when you have some red LEDs... they just pop.

Cool. I think I'm sold on darwin clowns. I like the black white contrast. With a 6 foot tank I may attempt two different species on either side of the tank. But only time will tell with that decision. But I have my lfs looking for a pair of darwinclownfish that already have a host anemone. I told them to pick up all three. The pair and the anemone and I will get them all at the same time. It will be a while for them to find that. I can hold off on them until that time. Once I get my mh lights up I am going to start looking further into some corals before adding more fish. Possibly more bangi cardinals and green chromis if I add anything other than corals. I have 2 of each and want a nice school of about 6. At least with the cardinals anyways.
