Just an FYI....I came across this formulae for determining the amount of sand needed. This will provide, in lbs, the amount of sand needed for a depth of 1". I'm guessing this will be some what dependent on the size of the grains, but should get you close.
(Tank width) x (Tank length) / 1,728 x 70 = 1" of sand depth
