Hi...my name is Michael...I'm a former resident of the Atlanta area now living in Alabama. I've kept fish for most of my life and I've been slowly getting into saltwater/reef keeping over the last few years (by slowly, I mean I've been reading everything I can get my hands on and slowly buying my equipment). First I want to point out what a great source of info and fun the ARC forums are. I've participated in a wide range of forums over a wide range of topics and this is easily one of the most helpful, most courteous, flame-free, etc. I'm also planning as my build progresses to visit some of the ARC sponsors for dry goods and (eventually) livestock...the options for saltwater critters here locally are slim at best. Anyway, my first question. I have a buddy that lives in Orlando that has a salt tank...he's had it up and running for a couple of years and he's the type that learns more from trial and error and blind luck than research or advice. He has a 40-long sized tank with minimal equipment (a prizm skimmer, a tetra HOTB filter) and has had good success keeping various crabs, shrimp, branch sponges, rock anemones, urchins, feather dusters, etc. He has a decent amount of live rock (not sure the type or amount...he bought it locally piece by piece) and a shallow sand bed. His big problem is that he can't seem to keep fish of any kind for any length of time...and he has a problem with nitrates. (on to part 2)
