Ok so I bought a Anemone friday from Avarium. It's a neon green bubble tip...? It moved to a rock by the next morning. Then Monday morning I went to turn the light on and it looked lifeless, but still attached to the rock.....:confused2:
This morning when I turned the light on it was still looking lifeless, :***: but I left it alone. It's what I have learned with having corals, just leave them alone and hope for the best....But then dinner time tonight one of my boys came to tell me the Anemone had woke up!! :lol2: Sure enough I went over to look and it looks like it may have split....??? How do Anemones split, is it like Torch corals? I have no idea... :1zhelp:

I would add a pic but I can't take a pic til tomorrow morning :photo:

The body divides and detaches from the parent with part of the mouth opening. The new piece and the parent both heal by bringing the edges of the split together.

Nobody really knows what causes a split. There are many theories. But yes the nem will split on it's own. LilRobb did a great demo where he split a nem into four pieces. As long as each piece is cut cleanly and has a part of the mouth they should survive. That being said the larger the piece the shorter the healing time. ie... Splitting into 1/3's heals faster then 1/4's.

As mentioned above, anemones will split for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to, stress factors which will cause them to split and "increase the odds" of survival. Just make sure nothing bothers them, ie, clowns harassing them while they heal - you should be fine.

Good luck.

Minor correction if I may. Each piece that is cut needs to have a portion of the mouth AND the foot or it will not make it.

The natural process by which the split is a bit brutal. LOL It will attach it's foot in to locations and start pulling itself apart from the base. It basically rips itself in half.

Thanks for the assist Rich. I forgot about the piece of the foot.

Mine doesn't have a foot....?! From what they said when I got it.......

Edit: And My clowns haven't gone near them yet......not sure if they will.

If it is attached to something it has a foot. :-)

Not all clowns will take a host. It is hit and miss. Some with take just about anything as a host. Others will ignore an anemone for months and the one day find they just cant resist.

Here is a pic of it....
Hope it helps.....

Here is a pretty good time lapse video of one splitting (not mine)

I had a RBTA split about a month ago, It happened right after a water change. I am not sure that is what triggered it, but thats the only thing that changed.

They may move apart and maybe not. I would be they will. But, an anemone will stay put if it likes the lighting, flow, etc. If it doesn't it will move. When mine split, the smaller one moved after a couple of days. Then it was all over the tank for a long time before it found a place it liked. Now neither one budges.

Well Like I said, I got it Friday but before I had put it in the tank I had done a water change before adding it just to make sure it was happy..... So now I have 2 which is funny cause I have twins and they are tickled by it!! :lol2:
