Looking to possibly get an anenome and clown pair for my 120 and would like to know the best pairings , if you will, for types of anenome and species of clowns. I know each specimen is different but there has to be some general pairings hobbyists tend to gravitate towards.

My clarki pair took right to my sebae pair. (and my flower pot...) If you like clarki clowns and sebae anemones, you can get mine for a great price! :)

ii might try a large frogspawn or something first. Not sure i am prepared for a nem yet.

Edit: Wow, thats a bad video. It is of Oc. clowns hosting a flowerpot. Those are real easy to care for, if you like how they look.

I would get a bubble tip, there are several colors, and any clowns except the maroon clowns

BTAs are super easy... I'm still "new" to the hobby and my RBTA Iv had less than six months just split.

yep have to agree that Clarkiis seem to take to them well. Mine immediately took to my rose tip. I tried skunks before that and they couldnt care less. The best way is to find a store that already has a clown and anemone together so you can tell the clown knows and will use one. Then buy that one.

Much depends on the type of clowns. Some species of clowns have a much higher instinct to host, than others, in my experience.

Bubble anemone is probably the easiest anemone to keep (as far as host anemones go). Clowns that will naturally take to these anemones include Tomato, Maroon, Clarkii (Clark's will take to nearly anything - very strong hosting drive), Skunks, Cinnamons, Fire Clowns.

Ocellaris and Percs have a much weaker instinct. Their natural host anemones are in the carpet family, but some will take to BTAs but it's hit and miss. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, and sometimes they will in time.

I guess the first thing is to decide either what kind of clowns, OR what kind of anemone you want, and then choose the other based on that.

I would like a pair of black onyx clowns but i dont know about their hosting instincts. I guess i really dont have a preference on a nem but id probably go with a hardy one. i like the green tips

I would put the anemone with the clowns in a small basket on the side of the tank. They stayed there until they formed their symbiotic relationship. Then I'd just release them in the tank or sell them.
