Does anyone know if you can use sand collected from the beach? I'm not talking about populated beach either. I'm more looking at like drift wood beach on jekyll island. Places where people don't frequent. 2 to 3 inch sand bed in my 130 and 5 inches in my 20 is a lot of sand. It would be worth the drive if it's possible. Any thoughts?

honestly it can be but all i hear is horror stories of pollution and strange crap. Sand is so cheap i wouldn't risk it.

I Agree

Jekyll Island sand is mostly feldspar/quartz sand. The sand we typically use in our reef tanks is calcite/aragonite. even if the mineralology was correct I still would not use Jekyll Island sand for fear of introducing pollutants.

I would not use anything but sand that was specifically made for use in a reef tank.

I'm fairly sure it's illegal too. Always be aware of local laws when collecting any sand, rock or anything that is alive. Know what is OK and what isn't, because there can be some stiff consequences, and not knowing is not an excuse.
