Just a simple float valve and gravity.

I've tried different versions of them. They work if installed correctly. If you're planning on drilling acrylic, I recommend a forstner bit, over what he used. A forstner bit won't grip while it drills, so your chance of splitting the sump in minimal and it makes a very clean hole. Using a forstner bit is even more important on older sumps, as they tend to become more brittle over time.

I also find that the Kent Float Valve is a little bulky. You can find smaller ones that work great that aren't so wide.

I use two of these same types of floats. One in my refugium and one in my 55 gal mixing container. They work reasonably well. The only issue I have had is sometimes the float doesn't completely shut off the flow of RI/DO water and I have had my refugium almost overflow. This is probably due to the float being a year or two old and the seal is getting a little worn. Otherwise they work great.
