If/when I decide to buy an Apex will my current gear work with it? A lot of it is no big deal, like the cheap power heads I have to keep the area behind the rocks clean(ish), but what about my Varios return pump and RedSea gyre? Any chance I can ditch their controllers and do everything with the Apex?

I control my Varios return pump with my Apex, very simple to setup and operate. Never tried a gyre but if it has a 0-10 volt port on the controller I believe you can do it.
An Apex can control them but you'd need to keep the controllers. Right now the only option to completely ditch controllers is the Coralvue Hydros WaveEngine. It is also compatible with Apex and it can power and control up to 4 pump or powerheads.

I have the hydros controlled with my apex. The integration is fantastic. I control gyres and octopulse pumps with it. It's cool because you can put the pumps in feed or water change modes through the apex 0-10V outputs. But also the hydros can generate the flow patterns but with an overall speed control through the apex. The hydros can drive varios pumps as well. I love my varios pumps. I use individual 0-10V channels on my apex to control them. By keeping them separate you can still control them if you lose your apex or hydros.
I just wish it could control Vectra pumps too. Sigh...
