Apex tried to nuke my tank

so just had a scary 2.5 hours. Got home from work and lights on the tank were off... somethings wrong. Go to the display and it's totally frozen and buttons don't work. Hmm... maybe cycling power will work. I unplugged the eb8 strips and plugged them back in....
at which time ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!!!! Lights were flickering like a disco, pumps were turning off and on, chiller was running full bore, heater running full bore.
And most fun, dosers were all cranking into the sump
2nd most fun, ATO was also pumping fresh water into the tank well beyond my cutoff switch height giving me the urge to gather animals and build and ark.

At which point i'm frantically yanking cords out of the eb8's guessing which ones were the dosers and cursing myself for only labeling half the cords.
Finally get chiller, heater, ATO, dosers unplugged and let the fish have a dance party to the led disco.

Finally get in via fusion and everything is reset to factory defaults and labels, so all the outlets think they are something other than what I programmed them to be. Several power cycles later still same problem. Then after searching the web forever trying to figure out how to upload my apex backup program I stumbled onto a thread (not on the neptune site) that actually had helpful info of how to upload (via the classic dashboard by logging straight into apex like we used to).
Of course, couldn't get into apex and kept getting page not found 404 error, even after popup login screen sometimes.
So quit using chrome, downloaded IE11 and tried... no soup still... cycled router and apex several more times and finally got logged in. Then updated the firmware and web pages, then uploaded my backup and tank seemed to settle down to normal. Fusion wasn't connecting anymore so then I had to monkey with IP addresses and reset apex again and finally things look correct again.
there were 2 outlets that for some reason were mislabeled but everything else seems to be working again.

So, lessons learned:
1. label your cords, you may need to get to them fast in an emergency
2. Have a plan for what you will do if your controller dies (things get so complicated with apex programming, it can be hard to remember what you need to plug in/setup to run in emergency mode for a couple days)
3. backup your apex, mine was only 3 weeks old so only minor dosing adjustments and alarm adjustments

So, fyi the neptune service really is pretty awesome. I was eating dinner about 3 hours after I posted on their forum about my issue and they called me on the phone to make sure it was resolved. The guy looked up my information from my post and found my cell number on an old ticket.
He also told me I could buy another control module and "clone" it so I could hot swap if I had an failure, which I may do with the new tank.

That sounds like an interesting idea. Whats the cost of a new control module?

Sorry to hear you had those issues Rusty. I can't even imagine what it would be like to deal with that. I must say though it sounds like Neptune went above and beyond. It's great to hear.

You just take a backup of your active unit and do a restore to your second unit. You just need your second unit plugged into your network.

I continue to take periodic backups of my current unit, but I don't restore it every time to my second unit. If I had a main controller failure, I'd take my last back file and restore it before I swapped it. In the 8 years I've been running Apex I had to do that once and I also had to lend my unit to a friend that had a similar problem. In both cases, the units were sent into Neptune and they did a "factory reset" on them. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. They're computers ... stuff happens.

So what about the fallback options? Did those kick in or was it all just full on?

Why?

Lots of things can go wrong when dealing with computers. Heat, electrical surges, diodes, transistors, processor chips failing and lightening strikes just to name a few. Computers aren't 100% free of failure. :(

I just looked up the pricing and the few places that sell it new are $275, including from Neptune.

I'm not a not a fan of apex units. To me , its not only complicated to set up, its never ending things you need. Not saying there not good.

I love mine and it's been nothing short of spectacular. I've never had a problem with mine. However, it can be a bit daunting setting it up the first time and programming all the equipment.

I have a friend who runs an Apex and two of his head units have gone out. For that kind of money it should not be as prevalent as it is. For the company to suggest that you get another one and have it as standby is the nail in the coffin for me. If the initial cost justifies back up units such as with Jebao products sure, no problem but not at the Apex price point. I don't see it.

Even with the issues I've had with the apex, I'd still rate it as the best single purchase I've made for my tank. Not many aquarium related purchases I look back and ask myself why I didn't buy it sooner.

I really wouldn't compare an Apex to a Jaebo product in anyway, shape or form. I've had the same unit for almost three years (I bought it used) and have never had a problem. Unfortunately, with any elctronic device there will be some defects or issues. In a perfect world everything would work and function as intended forever. Unfortunately, electronics aren't always perfect and I can certainly attest to the fact the my Apex has saved me several times from my own stupid mistakes (dosing) and several pieces of equipment that failed. To me the piece the of mind that I have experienced with my Apex is worth every penny I invested.

Ok, better put the lid back on the can of worms that I didn't mean to open. I just need simplicity. If I win a apex set up, I'm not going to refuse it. I will just need someone to help me set it up.

Old age. As in the user not the computer. Yes Dave, I am talking about you. :)

Lol. Nah I'm just overly pationate about my Apex. Once you win it I'll be happy to give you some pointers over the phone. :)

Coming from someone who won an Apex, I would totally buy one now knowing the functions and capabilities. By far the best item on my tank.
