When placing rock I tend to be clumsy and "in the past" have even scratched a few tanks here and there just trying to get layout ideas.

What methods have u guys used to get a visual of how you want your rock layout without having to use your tank?

I use painters tape and mask off the footprint of my tank on some old cardboard or my garage floor. Make sure to include your return(s) if you have them. I also used an 1/16" piece of lexan on the bottom of my tank before I placed the rock in the DT. I'm not sure if it would protect the bottom glass if one was to fall or not but it sure made me feel better!

I suppose if I was going to run without sand this would be a great idea as far as the acrylic protection. I'm not worried about rock fall in tank as much as I am with accidental scratches. Although breaking a tank bottom would be a bummer as well
