A friend of mine has a storage room behind his tank, but it sits up about a foot higher than the sump. When the float switch kicks on the pump, it won't stop. Tried just about everything I could think of and the problem persists, any solution other than moving the ATO reserve?

You can drill a small hole in the hose, just above the water line to create a siphon break. Also, a check valve would work.

Thanks, I'm thinking the small hole will work great!

Doubt the hole works, it is siphoning down.
A hole in the TO container will cause water spray and one in the sump will be useless...
Check valve, baby!

the pump won't stop because the power supply on the pump is set to a controller with an electronic (solid state) relay..

put it on a mechanical (magnetic relay that clicks) relay and your problem will be solved..

You are correct that the problem is with the siphon so a check valve or a non latching relay will not work . You will either have to lower the pump or create a siphon break. It will have to before the discharge side of the pump or at an elevation higher than the water level of the pump intake. One way
