good stuff

Perhaps old thinking, but I've read (years ago) that the only auto-feeders that haven't failed, are the ones that will.

I'm certain the technology has improved since that article was read...

My ehiem has been running for 4 years straight now with no problems....well the screen is half dead, but it still works fine.

Totally love it, dont need to worry about forgetting to feed frozen for a day or two or go on vacation for a week.

your right amanda.... now that i read that and think about it.... but ya i need a auto feeder that will feed FROZEN krill to my puffers. anyone seen one that will do that

Yup but they are pricey, i think they are called "the kid next door"

That's impossible, unless you somehow rig the auto-feeder with dry ice (which you would have to replenish), or modify an existing freezer, or something along those lines.

The purpose of an automatic feeder is that it will sit there with food in it all the time, and it will dose out the food at specific time intervals. If you tried to do that with frozen food, the food would defrost while it sat in the feeder, and then it would begin to rot.

I'll add a question, do you guys have pumps turn off when the auto feeder dumps? I always turn my pumps off when I'm feeding to ensure the food is eaten instead of lost in the current and stuck in the rocks.

Also, how do you get the fish to know where the food will drop? Do they need to be conditioned for feeding at certain times of the day?

If you use a feeding ring it will contain the food from going into the overflow. The fish will smell it and come. Later they will be able to sense when it is about to go off and be waiting

I swear my fish can hear it. When the eheim first starts turning, they are all up under it even before it dispenses food.

Trigger-happy, i understand the frozen would rot, that is why i was wondering if "they made one for frozen" one that would keep the frozen, FROZEN until it was time to feed. i dont want it to feed the fish for me all the time, as i like to watch the fish it, just good to have when i decied to go on vacation for 2 weeks here in the summer.

They make some nice carnivore pellets to put in it. Freeze dried krill would work too

Whenever we run out of frozen krill, we give freeze-dried. The fish don't seem to notice a difference. It's all vaguely pinkish and shrimp-shaped, to them. :) Try getting them used to freeze-dried for a week or so prior to leaving on your vacation so that you can make certain they're actually eating it.

i havent had luck with freeze dried in the past but that was with my other fish, so i will try it again but if that doesnt work i will have to try something else... not sure what
