I am going to set up a Auto Top off this weekend and I was wondering if I should just sit a 10 gallon aquarium with a heater beside the sump or go with some other type container? I saw a couple space saver type containers and I also thought of just a basic rubbermaid but I am not sure of the ups and downs on what type I decide on.
The system is 60 tank and 20 sump
Any advice is much appreciated

Heater is not needed for ato. The amount of water is so low that the temp is not a problem.

I just use a 5 gallon water jug that I bought from Pure Reef. I'm sure other stores have them. I drilled the small outlet to fit the airline tubing, and add water through the large opening. I wanted the closed lid, so it didn't collect dust, etc. The container is just a matter of personal preference and space limitations.

I don't think you need a heater, because you shouldn't be adding that much water at a time.

Yup Yup..

I use a square 3 gallon home-brew plastic bottle with rubber cork top just because it fits right.

If I go out of town, I wheel out my 15g Gamma Vittles Vault full of RO and let it sit in front of the tank/sump with the front cover off. At the end of the day, get whatever fits & pleases you.

I just added a small starlite container with a float to the seahorse tank this weekend. It only holds 3.5gal but thats a week worth. All i have to do is turn the ro on and it fills and stops automatically

This is mine, and I got the container from another member, is always good to meet new people here

Does anyone else find it at least somewhat ironic that "containerman1" is asking for advice on, of all things, containers?? lol...sorry, I had to

I had very limited space inside of my stand, and didn't want to put anything beside it, so I settled for a 3-gal cat litter container...rinsed very, very well, mind you.

IMHO, the only thing to consider is size, based on available space, otherwise, a container is a container for this particular application. Or, you can find something like
product.do

You could take a large decorate flower pot and put a container inside and then put some fake plants on top know one would know that you had an auto top off under the flower pot beside the tank

On my 55 gallon I use 2 glass jars with wooden tops that I painted and drilled a small hole for a tube. They dont look that great, but given that they are not hidden I had to make them look decent. On my quarantine system I simply use a 1 gallon milk jug.

JB:D I have all the 5 gallon pails and containers ( I have them from 1/2 oz. to 275 gallon My wife gets mad sometimes because the garage gets packed with samples) I would ever need just wanted to see if there was a better option. I also learned I didn't need a heater and I wasn't sure if the sensor would fit down inside the opening of the water jugs. I really like the ottoman idea also. Keeps everything looking neat.
Thanks for everyones in put it has really helped me with some great ideas.

Thats a great idea....

+1 on not needing the heater. It won't add enough water at one time to effect the temp of your dt. I use the standard 5 gallon water jugs you can get at most fish stores. Having a couple of them makes changing out when empty much easier. No siphon needed :)
