Well im finally constructing my fuge below my 29 gallon. I want to seperate the drain, fuge and return with plexiglass pieces from lowes. Is there any material not safe for a reef? Also, the plan is to have the first piece from the bottom to about 2/3 to the top, then another in the opposite direction about half an inch away. Is this acceptable or do i need to have three 'slots'? Maybe someone has a direction site reference or something before i just wing it? Thanks, John.

Just search for "sump" and you'll find a ton of info. To get you started, check here:

I have the fuge seperate, the sump is a 20 ga with baffles in the center area seperating the skimmer and the return. If I do again I would have a 2-3 inch gap between the first and center baffle with an egg crate shelf that I could lay a bag of charcoal or other chems in. I would definatly put baffles in because it helps with micro bubbles. Also I would make the return side as large as possible so that evap is easier to deal with.

I like the return split to the fuge. It looks like it would both help the return flow rate and slow the flow in the fuge. I was looking at a drain box idea within the fuge section than baffle to the return section. Now im thinking the drain in a small area, to a baffle that can hold filter media, to a return with a t joint that controls flow to tank and fuge on the end. This should work well since I cannot figure a way to add my HOB aqua C remora to the sump. I can only fit a ten gallon under my sump, but i think this design will maximize the fuge and return sections. Ill make some plans and get back. Thanks for the tips, there are so many designs!

If I had to do it over again though, I think I'd leave out the bubble trap between the drain and the return section and just have the skimmer and the return pump in one compartment. I'm not convinced that the bubble trap does anything except limit my space and make my PS fit too tightly.

The skimmer would not perform as good if you did that. The return section water level fluctuates up and down and it would effect your skimmer.

Heres the way I have always dont my sumps....

Overflow in one side....then refugium(Now is filled with cheato)......then a skimmer compartment......then your return section. This is done in a 55 gallon tank so there was plenty of room.

To each his own....I like to have the fuge on one side, the overflow/skimmer compartment on the other and the return in the middle. I've got dual overflows and valves to control the amount of water that goes through the fuge as I don't want the full flow volume going through the fuge section. But that's just me...

Well I went to make sure the ten gallon would fit and the thing is like a fraction of an inch too wide!. Im debating shaving the sides of the stand, but the maintenence would be a nightmare. I guess Ill be shopping for some acrylic like I originally planned. Anyone know where to start close by Marietta? I only need a very thin gauge to fit in the stand (1/8 I think, need to check the depth chart). Anyways, thanks for the input, post more soon if anyones interested, but pictures will be a little difficult without a digital camera.
