Banded Cat Shark Question

This may sound stupid, but I had to ask... I was wondering if live sand sold at places like Petco is a suitable substrate for a Banded Cat Shark? I have heard they need a smooth substance on the bottom so it doesn't cut and scratch them up give them an infection of any sort. I just noticed that the live sand looks like it has pieces of coral and stuff mixed in it, so I was just wondering if it was ok to have down?
