i ain't looking to start trouble :D but what is it with these corals that look like a 4 day old nacho dorito with sumpin bad growimg on it? give me some kryptonite green candy cane, or some duncans, or some micromussa.

I'm kind of with you but, to each his own. Some of them look like melted ice cream to me as they grow out. Some of them would look pretty cool grown out over a big rock but I always see them on plugs laying in the sand.

Couldn't agree with you more....but I imagine the chalice fad will follow in the same footsteps as the acan fad.

A grown-out chalice is a beautiful thing compared to the weird looking frag-on-a-plug.

I was given a frag some years ago (and I don't even recall who gave it to me) - I was kind of underwhelmed but appreciative - shoved it in the nano. It grew and grew - eventually too big for the nano and everybody oohed and ahhed over it.

Now it's over 8" across and would probably be twice that if we didn't frag it occasionally.

Mine's pretty but just green... imagine that with turquoise or orange or bright red (we're growing a red one now)... or some of the other crazy rare colors...

It's kind of like the ugly duckling... these awkward frags one day turn into amazing showpieces.

I still think they've overpriced "fad" corals.

This is a thread based totally on opinions, so there's really no sense in debating the topic.

Agreed on pricing. And not trying to start any debate, by any means.

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder, no argument here.

The same statement could apply to any coral... a grown out *anything* is bound to be a far cry from a small cutting. I don't think I've ever met a show-sized coral that didn't make me go, "wow", even if it wasn't my cup of tea.

I just like their look under actinics... other than that.. they're "eh"

I was at Darren24 's place today picking up my rbta:yay::yay::yay: and he has a leather coral that would be soso at 3" diameter but is stunning at Cadillac hood size! But the fact that some corals may be pretty to some and not to others definitely makes our individual tanks unique. I have a tendency to buy the ones I can afford and set back with envy for the ones I can't afford.

It's not just the ridiculous price tags on acans/chalices that keeps me away...I just think they're boring. I don't dig on sandbed stuff (acans) and I don't want flat encrusting stuff that will just take up real esate in my tank (chalices).

I like SPS staghorn type corals the most....they just look so "coral reefish."

anyone have some small frags of these :bubba: or something close would due, they seem to do well in my tank and i've always liked them.

You'd have better luck placing posts like these in the WTB section.
