I heard a few people running into problems with GFO not tumbling correctly or units leaking. Based on your expirence what's the favored GFO reactor?

I am quite happy with my BRS single reactor for GFO. I had it stop tumbling once, but that was because the top and bottom sponges had gotten clogged up with gunk. A quick bleach soak and they were good as new.

I just installed a TLF 550 3 days ago with no leaking but the GFO granules ( BRS ) wont tumble , atleast its not leaking lol

I've got 2 BRS individual reactos with carbon and gfo plumbed off my manifold and with the small ball valve that comes with it on the 1/2" line I'm able to get it to tumble so I'm thinking it's doing what's it's supposed to.

Most of the other brands pump the water through the bottom of the unit and into a distribution plate. Does BRS have or do something comparable or how do they work?</span></span>

The BRS reactor looks like the canister you would get with a RO/DI unit. When you unscrew the canister you'll find a seperate container inside into which you put the GFO or carbon. Depending on what you are loading you use the sponges inside the container to either keep the media either at the top or the bottom of the canister. You then load the container back into the canister and the water enters from the top and runs down the sides of the canister and enters the container with the media from the bottom and pushes up through the media and exits through the top of the container into the return line. A small ball valve regulates how strong the flow is so that the GFO will tumble. All the fittings are push in John Guest type fittings that fit well with no leaks.

I run one of these and Have had no issue with them.

Thank you! Putting in my order now.

I really like the BRS reactors. I use one for my GFO and it has worked great.

One of the things that I really like about them is how easy it is to change out the media: you unscrew the bottom, remove the sponge, and dump the media... that's it I used to run a MR1 reactor for my GFO, and it was a real pain to change out the media. The BRS are much easier to maintain.

The duluxe unit jesse is really nice. It has a purge button that you can press to get all the air out. I really like it. They are really good priced too. I really like BRS all thier products are great as well as CS. I use their rodi unit too love it. Good luck with em. What type of GFO and Carbon are you ordering?

Edit: jesse go ahead and order a couple of the inner canister things too it makes changing out the media so much quicker!!! You have 2 on stand by loaded and just swap em out and back to work. Really it saves me about 15 20 mins on my maintanance

Ordered two Deluxe units. Not sure what kind of GFO or Carbon for that matter, thats my next question.

Go with Bulk reef gfo granuals they tumble better than pellets. As far as the carbon, I use the BRS lignite and am very pleased BUT, the lignite has been linked to hole in the head syndrome in tangs. I will be switching to BRS ROX8 after mine runs out. Jmaneypanda posted the thread with the info about the lignite. you can probably find it. For real though get a couple extra of the inner canisters to save time during your WC routine. I change my carbon every 2 weeks and GFO every 3 to 4 weeks. I'll post a link of the canisters so you will know what I am talking about. It really really really saves time.

these are the extras. You will get one each with each reactor. each cartaridge has 3 sponges. With gfo you put a sponge in the top, then a sponge in the middle. you add your gfo and then screw the bottom on and it has the 3rd sponge attached to the screw on bottom cap. Carbon is different, you put a sponge in the top, then you pour in your carbon. Then you shove the 2nd sponge up to the carbon and press it in tight. you don't want the carbon tumbling. Then you screw on the bottom cap and sponge. Watch the BRS videos they really are well made and very informative. Also there is a calculator on the site. you type in your total water volume taking in account for how many gallons you lose from your rocks. Tell them what type of media it is and it calculates how many tablespoons to add. Very simple to do. When you get it all hooked up you need to rinse the media again very simple. You will enjoy the results. The most noticable thing to me is how the carbon takes the yellow tint out of the water. I'm really glad I run both GFO and Carbon now. Its worth the extra expense. Good luck bro get ready for an even better looking tank.
