I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a used 90 gallon set up. It has everything I need except for a UV sterilizer and a protein skimmer.

I am still fairly new to this so I'm clueless about the sump. Is it a good idea to place a protein skimmer in a sump? If so, what are some good models to use for that. I am posting a link that will hopefully let anyone that wishes to see the sump so you have an idea.

Thanks for the advise. I'll start begging for advise to figure out how to replumb it in a few days.

Not the best sump and you should take the bioball out, do you have budget on a skimmer?

Not really, we want to go with quality rather than speed. We are going to combine a 36 bowfront and a 29 Biocube into the 90 gallon.

I remembered reading that bio balls were no good. Is that a good spot to pile in some of the Seachem stones?

Depending on your budget, creation as great deals on reef dynamic skimmers. I've used them in the past and love them.

I have the same sump and run a CadLights Tubeless on mine (probablly a little small for your application). Just make sure to measure space under the stand before you buy.

AquaC makes the best skimmers for my purpose. They are high performing, but do not require the constant adjustments and fiddling as with other skimmers I've used.

I've heard great things about these skimmers and they're cost effective...

IMHO a
SWC 160
Or
AquaMaxx EM 200 or 300
Great skimmers small footprint head working skimmers.

IMO if you have the cash go with the BubbleKing mini 160.

I have the 200 and it is awesome.

Now, there will be some that say they are overpriced, and you can do just as well with a MUCH cheaper skimmer... but these are some of the best IMO.

GOOD LUCK! Skimmers are FUN~

You've got close to 200 gallons total. How many fish will be in all 3 tanks? Type of fish...
Reefoctopus has their super space saver models that have a very small foot print. They require a little fine tuning to get set but are very effective for their size.

if you like a skimmer that constantly tips over if you barely touch it, for sure go with reef octopus :(

I just went with a Vertex skimmer... I see nothing but good things about them. My system isn't up yet so I can't comment LOL.

Aquamaxx has a really small footprint with the pump inside the chamber. I've got the 200 on my 135 and it skims its balls off.

I was gonna go with the vertex but it wouldn't fit in my sump

I did:) and its great :)

I DID have a euroreef before the BK though and while it was a great skimmer... just NOT a bubbleking... not close.

no offense to anyone. we all love what we have and know :)

I'm sure bk is great. Just saying that I wouldn't spend the money.

IMO what makes the bk is the red dragon pump.

I'm thinking about going with the Vertex 150 in my build. Seems to be a beast.
