Ijust finished setting up my 75 and I need to add sand. It's full of water. What do you guys suggest to have the least amount of mess

1st make sure the sand is fully rinsed, even if its no rinse sand....rinse it! and then rinse it again!

you can use a funnel and vinyl tubing to place the sand where you want it and will reduce the mess slightly.

I've gone so far as to pour it down 2 inch PVC pipe, it still made a mess! No getting around it really.

If you have a large rubbermaid or something i would try to drain out as much water as possible, then lay sand, then pump back in on a dinner plate as not to disrupt the sand bed. all this will do is keep you from staring at a cloudy tank for a few days but i imagine once you stir the bottom it will all kick up, keeps it off the rocks at least..

If you just finished setting it up then I would not worry about it clouding the tank since it will be weeks before you place any livestock in it.

Wash the sand. Put it into a ziploc bag (you'll probably have to do this a bit at a time). Close the bag. Submerge the bag to the bottom, open the bag and dump the sand, as close to the bottom as you can.

Repeat til you've added all your sand.

You will still get some cloudiness, but it will be a lot less than if you pour it down through the water column.

Depending on how fine/dusty the sand is, the tank will take a bit of time to clear up.

If you have access to a canister filter, that can help. You can also use a flocking agent like Seachem Clarity if you wish - that will speed up clearing a bit.

I wouldn't put extra powerheads etc., online right away. You'll need flow to cycle, but you don't have to have "super" flow to do that. Once the sand begins to populate with beneficial bacteria, it actually becomes heavier, and is more likely to stay in place.

Heh, maybe one day I'll put a thread with "useful hints" or something on my sponsor forum...

I put my sand in and then moved it all to one half of the tank and poured the water in where the tank was bare. Still made a big cloud, but wasnt so bad..

you can also use a cup. As stated before RINSE RINSE RINSE and RINSE again, then just scoop the sand up in a cup, hold it upright, submerge, take all the way to the bottom, then pour. That will almost eliminate the bad cloud and what little does form will clear in a day or so...

Good luck and remember slow is your friend.....

Puzzled by this... if the tank has to cycle, etc, where's the time emergency?
As Grouper stated, don't worry about the sandstorm because nothing should be living in it for a few weeks anyway.

I'm in the middle of moving :-( and I need move everything asap. Nothing new inside the tank, just moving it
