I have a huge problem.. it is basically wrecking my tank.. its EVERYWHERE. HELP

i believe water movement add some powerheads, there is a red slime remover that works very well but it doesnt solve the problem its just a quick fix. that being said i used it and it worked GREAT and then i added some powerheads and the stuff never came back.

i did.. once i saw the problem starting, i added a nice big powerhead that moves the water around, now i have 3.. but its just gotten worse.. everyday its worse.. will the remover help at all?

It will show up in slower moving areas usually, when you have a high nutrient build up.

Reduce your photoperiod a little and commence a few 15-20% water changes every few days or so.

Watch not to overfeed.

See how that goes.

waterflow is one reason but main reason is from nutrients in water, ive seen this stuff only grow on the highest flow areas in a tank, keep up on water changes, skim heavy, phosban and carbon usually dont hurt either.

Well, ive been reducing feedings, and adding nutrients, i has a carbon bag in there.. i need to get a new airstone for my skimmer, im trying a remover too.. to get an idea into everyone head i took a picture.. it makes me cry...

anywhere its purple, thats the slime

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><span style="font-size: 13px">You must export the same or more nutrients than you put in. Overfeeding, tap water, high phosphate foods, etc. </span></span>

<span style="font-size: 13px"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">Phosphate reduction/ removal and high trates could be the answer. Wet skimming with a skimmer that is rated at least double your water volume. If you cannot get a fuge or sump (you can maybe make a "Rubbermaid sump with cheato in it for a few bucks) you can get a $35.00 hang on phosphate reactor for your tank and put some GFO in there. In the future, you'll most likely need a refugium with Macro algae. If you choose GFO, you’ll need to start VERY SLOWLY! Use 25% of the recommended media, slowly increasing every 2-4 weeks. You need to acclimate your tank inhabitants over at least a 2 month period especially is you have any stony corals. Once acclimated you’ll need to change your Iron based media in the phosphate reactor more often. Your media will get saturated in 2 weeks or so depending upon how much is bound up in your rocks, tank, algae, etc. Use less media, change every 2 weeks. Use a great test kit like DD Merck, Hack, or colormeter or send to AWT. If you already have a fuge & reactor, be aggressive & change the media every 2 weeks.</span></span>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><span style="font-size: 13px">When you do your water change, take the end of the hose and suck all the algae down like a vacuum. It'll take a few water changes, but it works (especially after the phosphate remover kicks in)</span></span>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><span style="font-size: 13px">Use a phosphate reactor with some phosar or ROWA or whatever, and something to lower nitrates like a fuge, AZNO3, or other carbon source. </span></span>

In addition to Ralph's suggestions, after you vaccum what you can get, kill the lights and cover the tank to keep it dark for three days. That will knock the Cyano back so that you can start to get ahead of it. (Your corals will be fine...)

well, i got a red slime remover called Chemiclean red slime remover ( http://www.marvelousproducts.com/Chemiclean-Red-Slime-Algae-Remover-p/chemiclean.htm">http://www.marvelousproducts.com/Chemiclean-Red-Slime-Algae-Remover-p/chemiclean.htm</a> ) and now it all gone, been about 36 hours, tomorrow ill do a 20% wc and then turn my uv and skimmer back on, that should clean out all the remainder.. then ill just go in manually and clean the rocks because underneath the red slime it has turned into a bunch of smoots... so ill clean that out then be back to normal... i may do another dosing in a week or so to make sure that it is completely gone.
thanks for the help every one!

yeah, i think it hitched hiked from a few corals.. cause it started after i put them in.. and i was over feeding, so ill reduce that.. i got a better skimmer too and im adding a phosphate reactor.. so it should drastically reduce it if not completely knock it out

i know.. i have to do one anyway, i just waited to do this first.. ill do it every week for 2 weeks prob.. thanks

some people have have great results, & some people have crashes.

I also worry about having a product that could release a nerve toxin. I used it a few years back with great results, but them after researching what it was, I thew it out.

it is believed that Chemi-Clean is this:
