I would like to get some input on black sand, Ive used it in the past and really liked how it looked and how it seemed to bring the color out on the corals I had sitting in the sand bed but it was kinda hard to keep clean. Im thinking about going with it on my new setup but would like to know how to keep it clean

I have it. I don't think it's any harder to keep clean than white sand. I vacuum it every 3-6 months but have massive flow in the tank that probably helps keep it cleaner than some. (I would have an all out sandstorm if I had something like oolite.) I think it completely changes coral and fish selections from what most people do with white sand tanks. I would never put an Achilles or Black Tang in my tank. Not because they aren't striking fish but they don't contrast well against my black substrate. A plain old Yellow Tang or Coris Wrasse on the other hand is striking! My Orange Frog Spawn looks incredible with it. Dark/deep colored acans. Not so much...

I also have a TON of light going into my tank. I don't have to rely on a white substrate to reflect the light to make it look brighter. When some people go to black they have a hard time adjusting to the tank looking darker or dimmer due to the substrate absorbing light. If I put in white sand you'd have to wear sunglasses to look at it.

I think it's something you have to plan from the start and choose your fish and corals based on it. I look at my substrate like a hardwood floor and how it influences decorating a room. Wall treatments, couch colors, rugs, etc determine wall paint colors or vise versa.

If you started with Black and got several corals and fish with it in mind, you'd probably be happy going back. Just crank up the flow and get some undertow going to keep detritus off the bottom.

thanks seth, may I ask what kind of lights are you using because I never thought about how the light reflects off the sand and now that you mentioned it my tank did seem darker when I switched o the black sand awhile back.

When I had it in my nano I would suck off the top layer and replace it with new sand when I did water changes.

It was a PINA

Now I do a 70/30 mix of black and white

I would love to see pics of the mixed sand if you have any, I thought about that also, I just wasnt sure about how it would look and I didnt want to mix the sand and then not like it and have to get rid of it and buy more sand

Tank is a 4x2x2 120g
Lights are
400w Radiums x 2
AI SOL Blues x 3

Flow is MP40wES x 3
(I will likely put on one or two more. I have them sitting around as backup but, due to my aquascaping and colonies growing in size it's changing flow needs. I will need more pumps all dialed down to lower flow rates.)

Im using maxspect leds and im sure they are not putting out like those 400w radiums

I'm using black sand now. I have a 20lbs bag of Hawaiian black sand mixed with a small 5lbs bag of black moon sand. The black moon sand is a tiny particle size so it helps thin out the larger size of the Hawaiian.

I always here people talk about how black sand looks dirty, but I don't clean or vacuum mine and it looks like it did when new.

I have black sand as well and love it. I believe some black sand is magnetic so I'd recommend avoiding that at all costs because it gets caught in your MagFloat and then you're glass is covered in scratches.

Black sand here. Had white for a few years. Nothing I didn't like about it but after seeing some tanks with black, had to have it. Def agree with Seth on all his points. I think it gives the tank a deeper look with less light reflecting off the white. Don't think you'd b disappointed. Got mine from Rit at a great deal

I've had mixed sand and the black was magnetic, I stopped using mag floats awhile ago though so it wasn't a big deal, I like scrapers better so it was an easy time to switch.

do any of you guys have any sand sifters with the black sand.
