blasting particles off rocks? harmful?

i can see lots of tiny particles in the crevices of some of my live rock...ive seen people post that they blast this stuff off with a turkey baster and it helps keep nitrates down...when you do this do you just let it filter normally and hope that it doesn't settle on the rock again or do you use some other method to trap the debris

also do i need to worry about it starting a mini cycle?

I do mine maybe oonce a month or when I think about it .I have plenty of flow but still like to keep things clean.

Funny timing... I just blasted off my rocks last night for the first time in a few months. I used to do it a few hours before I'd do a water change but got lazy when I moved back in July. Have to start it up again.

And really, it doesn't matter how much flow you have. You'll always get some crap to settle into the rock which you can blast out directly. It surely won't hurt to get the stuff out once in a while...

Depending on the size of the tank you can use a small power head in your hand to blast the rocks off.

I use a MJ900 every couple of weeks to blow all of the junk out. I do it with all other pumps off and vacuum up the junk when changing the water. I have 1 MP40 on a 70 cube, so I have plenty of flow. I used to have 2, but that was too much. Regardless of flow, Detritus will settle in the holes of the rocks.

yeah my flow almost seems too much for some of my corals..i have a biocube14 with a korelia nano 425 and the stock return pump...but thanks for the info..next time i do a water change ill blast out the particles beforehand

I do it all the time and use a filter pad for a few hours to get the water clean again
