Blue Clove Dilemma

I need some advice on what to do about Blue Clove Polyps. So I am currently cycling my new 65 tank with dead Marco rock and live sand and I want to throw a couple of pieces of live rock from my 29 in there to seed it and get it going and then later after it is cycled, I plan to move over several more pieces of rock that have some mushrooms and other corals attached.

The issue is that I have blue cloves on pretty much every piece of live rock in my 29 not to mention the majority of my frag plugs and even in the sand in some spots and I am just not sure I want them to take over the new tank like they did in my current one. I do not really mind them and think they are attractive on the rock, but I do not like how they have even attached to the frag plugs and I am not sure, but they even seem to be keeping some of my smaller zoas from opening/spreading.

I have heard you can use Fluke Tabs to nuke them, so if I went that route would I do it in my 29 before I move anything or in the 65 after I move them or should I just dip anything I am moving in a bucket with the fluke tab dissolved before I place it in the new tank?

If I put the tabs in the 29, I have a bunch of GSP and a cleaner shrimp which I understand will definitely die as well as hermits and snails, which might die with the use of the tabs. I don't really care about the GSP as I was not planning on moving any of it to the new tank but my family would be crushed if I hurt Jacques the shrimp.

I don't dislike the BCP enough to take a chance on nuking my shrimp to get rid of them, so if this is a possibility, I guess I would just let them be and accept that I will have them in the new tank as well. What would you do? Thanks.

Either Dylan or Dave knows a way to rid them can't remeber which though

He used a fluke tab. lol.

Edit: I have some in my tank. just a couple patches. maybe i should pick them off with tweezers before I have an epidemic

Hey folks! A little late to the party- darn work!

Yes, I did use fluke tabs to rid my tank of blue cloves. The hardest part of using fluke tabs to kill the cloves is finding fluke tabs! They have been discontinued.

When I did the treatment, I did not loose shrimp, crabs, or snails. Experiences will vary.

I had removed my GSP, and Tyree green polyp leather before I did the treatment.

I did have a few complications related to the die off of the blue cloves/not having the skimmer on/still running biopellets at the time.

I do have a product that targets and effects worms in a very similar way... However I haven't used it for Blue cloves... Maybe someone who has blue cloves can spare me a frag to test with?

if no one else gives you one i will break some rock off next time im coming to aviarium on tues or weds. the rock they are on is DIY and super easy to break

Edit: oh wait you are in auburn you are like less than 10 miles from me. you know where hog mountain road is (not the one in flowery branch) the one that goes from 124 to 324. I'm on the end that meets 124 where Mill Creek Highschool and those two other schools are

Yep, you aren't very far from me at all.

I'll gladly take you up on the offer. I may have some time to swing by on Monday.

Thanks for the replies. After doing some more reading, I think my plan is to seed the new system with some rock from my current system and then wait and use a Fluke Tab (if I can find one) in the new system after it cycles and before transferring any corals or fish. That way it should kill any blue cloves that came in on the rock as well as any that might sneak in there over the next year or two. I am not going to put any in my 29 as with the quantity of blue cloves and GSP already in there, I think the die off would be overwhelming in such a small tank.

So does anyone know where I can find a Fluke Tab?

I had several dense patches now I only see one or two here and there, but not a good peice to break off. I'm going to take the rock out and look at it later as it has been rearranged and broken. hopefully I still have a good patch for you, but I may have spoken too soon

Edit: i guess to do a truly effective experiment you would need coral and livestock, possibly a chromis, a snail and a crab, and some various coral. or you don't really know if it is a reef safe treatment.

That's not clove polyps...this is clove polyps! :wow2:

You got the funk!! Lol.

Beautiful tank, though.

Hey DCReef did you have any luck getting rid of the BCP? I have some starting to spread and I want to get rid of them before they get too bad.

Sure did. I used a Fluke Tab and it worked perfectly. Got rid of all the Blue Cloves and GSP and I have had no ill effects. However, it is a whole tank treatment and has some side effects (kills some other types of corals and can kill shrimp, etc) and the the Fluke tabs are hard to find. So if your BCP's have not spread everywhere yet, you might want to try a different method first.

Thanks. I just started using Kalk paste to cover some of them up but I know I wont be able to get them all. May start trying to find a fluke tab just incase.
