Now, before anyone alerts the Tang Police, I am not planning on doing this because I have a large (beautiful!!!) RBTA in my tank and it's only 30 gallons. I'm only asking because this is info I haven't heard before.

I has always been to my understanding that ALL Tangs need a minimum tank size of 55 Gallons... Minimum. And that's for a VERY select handful of the species. Most need 90 Gallons or larger.

However, I was viewing a website that states Blue Hippo Tangs need a minimum tank size of 20 Gallons?!?!?!? Is this accurate?

I'd say a 125 would be sufficient, but the more the merrier.

So to answer your question.... a 20 gallon tank may work for a very very small (and young) hippo tang for about.... 6 months? Maybe?

20G would be great as a QT tank on a baby. Would be pushing it on a larger one.

You really need 5+ feet of swimming room for ANY tang.

That's what I was thinking... OK. Thanks guys.

I'm glad I'm not crazy in thinking this website maybe be a poor source of proper info!

this will answer most ??

Blue Tang
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons

Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons

but there are some tangs that take less room.

White Tail Bristletooth Tang
Minimum Tank Size: 70 gallons

Bristletooth Tomini Tang
Minimum Tank Size: 70 gallons

Powder Blue Tang
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons

I had a Kole Yellow Eye in a 3' long tank and it did well. But, I knew tha as it became an adult I would have to rehome it or upgrage. That is about the only one I would consider doing it with. Besides, it is so much more fun watching the dart across a 6' long tank. :-)
