Breeding LBS for food... worth it?

I'm thinking of making a hatchery. I've read of "gut loading" LBS to increase the nurtritional value; are they that poor without it? And how/with what do you typically gut load them?

Most importantly, in a non-breeding situation, is it worth it at all?

I'm going to tag along for the ride. I've thought about doing this once my 95 gallon is fully stocked.

I have seen powdered spirulina and have always thought about trying that myself to gut load them with.

So now I know what Jenn gut loads them with... but my real question is, is it worth the trouble?

My guess would be no. Are you trying to entice finicky eaters to eat? If not, what's the point? PE mysis have far more nutritional value than BS I would guess.

Nope... everything (including my Idol) eats like pigs. PE mysis are about 50 miles or more from me, so I was thinking more along the lines of a renewable food source (read: cheap).

I don't think it would be worth it Barry. BTW...brine shrimp eggs cost anywhere from $25-$47 a pound, depending on the quality eggs you buy.

I hatched out brine shrimp for Discus fry and it was a big PIA, IMO. Lots of work. You don't really have any need to do it, meaning you are not breeding any fish that require them.

Personally, I'd just buy some good dry food with the money you'd spend on the eggs.

Barry, I found some PE mysis in Carrollton at exotic pets just past the lake on your left. Rather large package for 18$ I believe..not to awfully far from us out here in the sticks haha
