Hey, all. Couldn’t get a good photo of this due to lighting, but I think you’ll know what I’m talking about. My tank is 3 months old—I have quite a bit of substrate since I want to have some sand dwellers later on. A few weeks back, a dark brown dusty (not sticky) substance has taken over the top of the sand bed. I removed the top layer and it was all white again; however I just did a water change and really worked the whole sand bed for a deep clean, and now the brown is back with a vengeance. Are these likely just diatoms feeding on the excess silicates from my deeper sand bed that was stirred up? If so I’ve heard to just ignore them until they die out. Thanks!
