I checked my cal and all today and both were pretty low so I added about a cup of each solution since their chart calls out for a good bit to be dosed. After about an hour I looked at my phone and by having a windows phone I can my have apex app live tiles on my main screen. I saw that my PH was at 8.71 when it normally is at 8.15 so I thought the live tiles was acting up on me so I opened the app and it was still reading 8.71. I ran to the apex and same reading. Everything is still looking ok but I'm just worried about the big PH swing. I've used brs 2 part before but always had a dosing pump and never had to do it manually. Has anyone else experienced a ph swing when manually dosing brs 2 part?

Don't add a full cup of the alk solution all at once. Even the BRS instructions kind of tell you to add it over time if you have to add a lot.

I usually only add 30 mls at a time and it raises my PH by 0.2 for a short period of time on 90 gallons.

Sodium bicarbonate will not add much, however, Sodium Carbonate (soda ash) will. Always use a reef calculator before adding significant amounts other than normal dosing.

Thanks for all the info. I've always used either dosing pumps or cal reactors so this is new to me.

Yeah bulk reef supply has a great reef calculator that guides you thru dosing. Not knowing anymore about your system or what you dosed makes it a little hard to know the effects.

Everything in a reef tank like stability so say alk and cal have been low for weeks. Well dosing up both of those within an hour was worse then anything.

Like everyone says slower the better and never be in a rush. Also when dosing your going to want to dose cal first wait at least 30 min and then dose alk. Dripping is always a good way to add chemicals also as alk will precipitate if added to fast.

I know the fact of your last statement, I got the Ca reactor from you and I was thinking "an old reefer asking about keeping levels???' j/k
I believe always that not all of the products and brands works the same in this hobby, much better to ask like you did and get the input from the people who's using it. :D

This is the reason why I stick with cal reactors. They're so much easier to deal with for me. Only reason why I started dosing my tank is because I started adding sps after I finally figured out how to grow them with my AI Vega. Before that it was all nems and zoas with a few LPS and with the amount of water change I do, it was more then enough to keep up with my parameters.

What did you figure out in regards to your AI lights that will allow you to keep SPS now?

I turned it up night. Lol. When I had the radion from my friend, he had them running at 100% and all his sps were bleached, so I figured the AI Vega was the same way and had it 50%. At 50% my corals looked the same as my friends corals so I just figured the Vega was no good for sps until one day I decided yo just ramp them up slowly. As I did that my two remaining sps started to color up and I started to see new growth on them.
