I have several that I would love to use for something other than collecting dust.Is it possible to use to grow any kind of coral.I have 2-48" ones with 4-65 watt bulbs each,1-24" one with 1-65 watt and 1-24" one with 2-65 watt bulbs.

Growth will be difficult, you may be able to keep some softies.... Other than that, not much will grow.... T5 or better is your best bet

Non-photosynthetic should be ok

If you really wanna use them u can although with a lot better lighting alternatives out there. Know that they put off heat, are not very effecient and your coral selection will be kinda limited.

Ahhh, remembering back when there we're no LED's, no T-5's, just expensive MH , pc's and vho's. You "can" grow stuff...just not as effective. Is it worth the hassle, probably not.

i kept softies and lps fine under a crappy oddysea version,i have 2 48" fixtures collecting dust myself, they just werent worth the cost of a bulb replacement.

Edit: they'd make a good housing for a diy led project:)

i have pc's and my candy canes and polyps, mushrooms, leathers, gsp, torch, do just fine, it dosen't always take a corvette to cross the finish line. :shades:

Sniff Sniff, I remember those days. Memories

What matters to coral? Spectrum and intensity. PC, VHO, T5, T12 all use the same process to produce light. Coral could care less what process is used to generate the spectrum and intensity they require.

If that is the case, you are saying for instance a PC can be just as effective as a t5 fixture on say sps? Really?

Doesn't seem to be the case for me. Couldn't grow hardly anything other than mushrooms, until I changed to t5's and halides now cant seem to stop them from growing

I have a mandarin/pipefish tank with these same corals (no torch) and they do just fine, you do have to change the bulbs yearly to keep any color(same as with t-5s).:)
