canister filer or no?

ive got a 55g fresh water tank that im debating turning into another salt tank. im currently running TWO cascade 1000 canister filters on it. they are rated for 265 gallons each so really one of them is more than enough as far as flow goes.

ive just been trying to find some info on the cons of using a canister filter on a salt tank, but i see it done all the time. but ive read they can turn into "nitrate factories" and all that. was wondering if i took out most of the filter pads and filled them with some live rock if they would work better.

oh and btw it would only be housing a snowflake eel.

The way I'd consider doing it is......

Use Both canisters
Use lots of Live Rock in the tank
only clean one filter at a time, but clean them often, alternating the cleaning every two weeks

For an eel, consider a method to surface skim, I've read they need very well oxygenated water....

Least thats the way I'd do it.

thats what i was thinking.

oh and i would use the spray bars on both of them with the top one tilted up shooting out of the water a little bit. well thats what i do now anyway and it seems to work great. and id also have a little hang on seaclone that should help some as well.

I run an Eheim Ecco 2234 canister filter on my 50 gallon. Although, I just got a Fluval 405 to replace the Eheim. the Fluval has almost twice the flow rate so Im gonna see what kind of results i get from a more powerful filter.

Here are the results from the past year.
I also run a Remora skimmer.

yeah, fluvals are niceee. would have them but the cascades that i got are by far the best gph rated canisters for the money . the priming function on them blowwwws though..
