Is there a way to make a canister filter useful on a saltwater tank? I received a couple of canister filters in a trade and was wondering what I could do with them if anything to make them useful.

Thanks,
Tyler

Some people have converted them to media reactors- carbon, GFO, etc. How it might be used would depend on the gph rating of the canister.

Ive used a canister filter for mechanical filtration forever. Works great and always comes out with a good amount if crap in it. Just gotta clean it at least monthly.

iPhone, Tapatalk, Tpyos

I have never used a canister filter, do I have to prime this thing? I hooked up the line in and line out i put both in the tank hook up all the hoses and plugge the filter in, it kicks on and sounds like its trying to work but it sounds like it needs to be primed....I filled the canister with water and it still did the same thing, anyone have any input for me?

Thanks,
Tyler

Yeah it needs to be primed. I usualy just hold a powerhead up to the intake to get it going with no fuss. I have some filter pads and chemipure elite in mine. I rinse my pads with every water change. I don't run a skimmer, just the canister and my water is usualy crystal clear unless im slacking on water changes.

What size tank do you have? and how often are you changing your water/cleaning the filter

I have a 20g. I usualy do a weekly water change, sometime two weeks, never more than that. Its really not that much of a hassle to clean it, an extra five minutes max. I had a 60g and had the same set up, filter no skimmer, I did water changes every other week on that one with no problems. I had a skimmer, but it was more hassle than it was worth and my parameters were just as stable and water just as clear with just the filter.
