OK when I started I had a Fluval 304/5,filled with rock but left in the sponges, I now have a sump and don't need the Canister but have kept it running so I could put it on a QT if needed. Do i need the sponges in the canister and if not do I need them when I set up a QT? What should I do with the sponges if not for now but for the QT tank? Clean and put away or what?

Thanks

Any and all of the above!

Think of a canister filter as a power head with beneficial bacteria. You could continue running it, as its not hurting anything, or you could clean it out, clean the sponges, and save it for when you need it. Its up to you, just dont forget to rinse the sponges every couple of weeks if you decide to keep it running....
