are they worth it?
what are your opinions on them?
Im looking run something along with my skimmer.

I run a Rena XP3 on my 38 gallon cube and have had great success with it and i have a skimmer but do not use it. Hopefully this helps. If you do go with a cannister always get one that can turn over more than the size of your tank.

And just to throw a contrary opinion into the mix. I never recommend canisters for saltwater.

They are great for freshwater planted tanks, but not for reefs, IMO.

If you've already got one, it might be handy to polish the water occasionally or run as a closed loop as an enhancement, with no biological filtration.

If you haven't bought one, don't waste the money.

Well said, If you have it, won't hurt to use as an additional filtration device If you don't already have one I would use the money on a good skimmer. I use an HOB on a 10 gallon sump/fuge for my 30 gallon Reef and a HOB on my 20 gal sump/refuge for my 55 not drilled but with overflow box. It adds additional filtration and easy to maintain. My 72 reef uses a more normal sump/refuge set up (no additional HOB).
