check out my improvised canopy opening system. im going to have to sand down some edges to get a smoother opening and closing action and then paint to match but i think its pretty good so far.

yes its a magnetic touch latch. the same as the ones used in entertainment centers. ill get some pics later today when i work on it more. heres a link to one almost identical to mine.

I like it, very clean looking! I'd like to see a pic from below to show how the latch is mounted, if you would.
 
no problem. mounting was super simple i just sanded the paint away using 50 grit sand paper and used gorilla glue and clamped it over night for a very strong bond. a this whole canopy was actually glued together. the only screws in it are the hinge screws.

i left the button detachable just incase anything happened i could take it out and remake it without having to damage the latch. and the metal plate serves two purposes it holds the button to the latch and it lifts the lid of the canopy up so i can open it.
