What type does everyone use?
Rox 0.8
Lignite
Bituminous
Something not mentioned

Edit: Also I am thinking Lignite unless nobody uses it. Small or Large size pellets if you use Lignite?

I just switched from the Marineland Black diamond to the BRS ROX 0.8, and I have seen a pretty significant difference in clarity and longevity.

Excellent, thank you for the info, and glad to hear the results are better.

I've done several different types... rox, regular from petsmart, black diamond, lignite and bituminous. Honestly, I went with the five gallon bucket of the bituminous from BRS.

Rox was nice, but you also need to make sure you reactor will work with such a fine media. Rox is very fine and finds its way everywhere.

I had a thread a while back about it... seemed like everyone was split, but the general idea from several was that carbon is carbon.

Excellent. Good to know. I know why BRS suggests Rox 0.8, but I want to know if there is any substance to it being better, seems Not. Any special filter/thing (needle point sewing thingymajig cut to size?) you put in the reactor to keep the carbon particles in the reactor?

I can see how Rox could be a problem for a reactor. I do it old school and have it in a filter bag.

I run lignite but there are links to it causing hole in head syndrome and after I finish my supply i'll switch to rox8

Interesting. Going to google to read more. Have you seen this happen in your tank?

I do have a wierd thing going on with my gobie just don't know what it is yet, she does have a hole in her head though lol. I had stopped running it for like a month when the hole develpoed and just started back. Jeremymanypanda was the one who posted the link. I dont have time to find it for you right now or I would. He posted on here so look around and read it.

No worries. I googled it. Thanks for the info.

Here is an interesting product demonstration vid from BRS comparing the performance of different type carbons:

Phosphate leaching is the biggest issue with cheaper low quality carbon such as the stuff from wallmart (I think it is an economy product from marineland). Somewhere in the processing of activated carbon phosphorous is used. And in the higher quality carbon it is removed and is garrentied not to leach out.

Blake,
Good to know. Thanks for the info on the phosphorous leaching, time for more reading.

Dave,

I appreciate it. I watched that video and it was very informative.

Seachem Matrix Carbon is money! The best carbon I've ever used (and I've used a TON of different kinds/brands).
