CF ballast, repair or replace?

It looks like 1/2 of one of my CF ballasts is not working. I have 4 96w CF lights in my fixture running off of 2 ballasts (1 ballast covers 2 lights). On one of the ballasts only one of the 2 lights will illuminate. If I switch the wires the illumination switches so it is not the fixture or the bulb. So it is most likely an issue with 1/2 of that ballast.

So, to my question. Is it easy to replace the innards of that half of the ballast or should I just plan to replace the entire thing?

That would be a pretty big step. It is likely more light than I need right now, but it is a fairly elaborate (ie expensive) light system...

I would hate to downgrade just because the ballast is not working.

You have two choices: fix the unit or replace. This is a good opportunity to upgrade to current T5 technology and the huge choice in bulbs, knowing that the CF market and bulb choices for that market is getting smaller and smaller.

You also have LED options and metal halide options.

I'd go with what your future plans for this reef are and any budgetary constraints you may have.

Actually, I'd repair the unit either way, because if/when you do decide to try another lighting technology, you could sell the unit to someone just starting out, which would be harder to do if one side is busted. It can't be that expensive to buy a simple ballast. CF ballasts are not expensive.

Hey, I have some extra cf ballasts and I have no plans on using them. I attended my first ARC meeting recently and several members were extremely generous so I would like to return the favor. Give me a call and come pick them up if you want.

Great move!

And now JOIN the club!

Just to close this up for anyone searching in the future. I was able to buy a new ballast and wiring it up in my housing was no big deal.
