what is the rate of growth for chaeto, mine is located in sump with a 4 to 5 in dsb with just a regular 75 or 100 watt buld in a reflector.

Interesting. Can you expand on the importance of spectrum, and what you have seen work best. Thanks

great looks as if i go and get the 5100k bulb there will be less heat and more growth which equals more waste absorbtion! i look on melev's sometimes but must not have noticed that

Thanks guys, already read it. IMO focus of reflector made the biggest impact on irradiance (photon flux density). He never shows the old reflector and admits that the original bulb would "overheat and shut down". That would have a major effect on growth by itself. The article is not easy to form conlusions from because of these. Sorry to be so picky, but I got paid good money for years to pick apart others research and figure out what was going on. I'm not saying I do here, I just think this article asks as many questions as it answers. More work with much better controls is needed.

Melev is a smart guy and gets a lot of good ideas IMO, but is a classic example of how limiting lack of scientific discpline and organization can be. I used to be the same way once, until a PhD Aeronautical Engineer/Fluid Dynamics Expert got ahold of me and made me slow down and really think things through. He was a true mentor and one of the most intelligent, kind and giving human beings I have ever known. If someone ever got Melev in an environment where someone could enforce that on his work, he could be a much bigger impact. Just MHO.

Good subject for more work if someone wants to do side-by-side study with controls in place.

great i will try it all out proven or not im still new to alot of this if it were gvt shipping regulations or something out of the country it would be easy

Were just relaying what we see and you always seem to disagree so ill just stop trying to help. Is there anyone in this hobby you dont have a problem with? You dont like Dana, you slam Mark for not being scientific enough....its getting old.

Dawg, I don't feel your assessment of me or my intentions (I have no agenda here other than to learn) is either accurate or fair. In fact I respect your opinions, although may not 'always' agree. I'm not sure who Dana is, and as for Mark (I assume that's Melev?) my statement was intended as encouragement not criticism. I have said before, it is VERY difficult to argue with success. I just try to sort fact from fiction and come up with SOLID reasons why things work or they don't. That's it. To do things any other way is to flip coins.

After re-reading Melev's evaluation I realized I missed his side by side comparison (~70 days) of the 2700k and 5100k. I now see what you were trying to point out. My apologies to all.

(I feel pretty foolish, but it was an honest mistake. Sorry for any hurt feelings)
